Last week, we exhibited the first prototype of an ongoing research focusing on CRAFT, investigating local materials and craftsmanship processes to create contemporary objects.
the product was LOOP, an experimentation with the flexible properties of the rattan. Rattan ( khayzaran in Arabic) can gather strength by bending and grouping several stems together. Instead of the traditional assembly of bending orthogonaly and knotting/screwing two tangents , we proposed to bend and connect each stem diagonally, to create a chair in one continuous loop. This system allows different profile variations, to create a variety of outdoor seating arrangements: a bench, a love seat, ect..
